Old photos on a USB stick: how to move them to your phone and keep them safe

Short answer: plug the stick into a computer, open My Albums in Telegram Desktop and pick the folder with photos. The folder becomes an album, the photos line up by the date they were taken, and the whole thing shows up on your phone. Below: why bother at all, what the other options are and where they fall short.

Why a USB stick is a bad place for the only copy

USB sticks and external drives last a few years and fail without warning: it opened yesterday, today it's “device not recognised”. They get lost in moves, lent to the kids “for a minute”, forgotten in an old laptop. And almost always they hold the only copy: the wedding, the children's first years, your parents when they were young.

The quieter problem: nobody looks at these photos. To show grandma her wedding you need the stick, a computer and an hour. On a phone the archive opens at the table, with one tap.

What happens to dates and folders

The date is read from the file itself, so a photo from 2009 lands in 2009 even if the folder is called “New folder (3)”. Every folder becomes an album with the same name, subfolders become separate albums; you can rename them later.

If the same photo sits in two folders, it won't be uploaded twice: the app recognises files by their content. And next time you pick photos on your phone, Snappy, the helper, tells you which ones are already saved — so you can delete them from the phone without fear.

How to move photos from a USB stick: step by step

  1. Plug the stick into a computer and open Telegram Desktop — the Telegram app for Windows or Mac.
  2. Open @MyAlbumsBot, tap “Start”, then “Open photos”. On first launch save the 52-character recovery code — somewhere other than the phone.
  3. “Upload” tab → “📁 Choose a folder — it becomes an album”. Pick the folder on the stick — the whole thing at once is fine: subfolders become separate albums. A ZIP archive works too, no need to unpack it.
  4. Wait for the upload to finish before removing the stick. Photos are encrypted right on the computer before they're sent.
  5. Open My Albums on your phone — the albums are already there. Check a few originals, and only then decide what to do with the stick.

Don't throw the stick away after the move — put it away as a second copy. Two independent copies of the photos that matter most is normal, not paranoid.

FAQ

Can I do it without a computer, straight from the phone?

Yes. Connect the stick to the phone with an OTG adapter and pick photos through “Files” — up to 30 photos or 5 videos at a time. For a large archive a computer is easier: there you pick the whole folder at once.

What about old videos — AVI, MPG, 3GP?

We keep them in the original, but they can't be played in the app — only downloaded. To watch them on the phone, convert them to MP4 with any converter before uploading.

Are the photos compressed?

No. JPEG, HEIC, video — and from a computer also RAW and TIFF — are stored as they are, up to 20 GB per file.

Can anyone see my photos?

No. Files are encrypted on the computer or phone before they're sent (AES-256-GCM). The key is created on your device and never reaches our server: we see only encrypted bytes, their count and size. You can check this yourself — there's a separate “Verify it yourself” page.

What happens to my photos if I stop paying?

They stay: you can view and download them. You go back to the free 5 GB; if you use more, new uploads pause, and everything above 5 GB is kept for as long as you had paid (at least a month, at most a year) — the bot warns you in advance.
