How not to lose your photos if your phone is stolen, drowned or broken
Short answer: the only way is a copy of the photos that lives outside the phone, with the key kept separately by you. Then a new phone gets the whole archive in a minute. Below: what to set up today while the phone is fine, what to do in the first hour after a loss, and how iCloud, Google Photos and My Albums behave at that moment.
5 GB free · no time limit · no card
Why “I'll back up later” doesn't work
Phones don't get lost on a convenient day. They drown on holiday, land screen-first on tiles, stay behind in a taxi. At that moment only one thing matters: is there a copy of the last few months somewhere else. If the backup was made “by hand, when I remember”, it usually lacks exactly what you'd miss most — the last summer, the first steps, the recent trip.
So the copy has to happen without you: a reminder in the evening, one tap to upload. And it has to live where you can sign in from someone else's phone without the password to your home computer.
How the clouds behave on the day you lose the phone
- iCloud. If iCloud Photos is on, the pictures are there: sign in with your Apple ID on the new iPhone. The catch: the free 5 GB runs out fast, and for many people syncing stopped long ago at “storage full” — the last months simply never reached the cloud.
- Google Photos. Same story: it works until the 15 GB shared with your mail is used up. And in “Storage saver” mode the pictures are compressed too.
- My Albums. Photos sit in an encrypted cloud, the key is tied to your Telegram account. Sign in to Telegram on the new phone — the archive opens, in full quality. If Telegram is lost too, there's the recovery code.
What all three have in common: without a cloud there is nothing. Pictures that lived only on the phone can't be recovered by a repair shop or the police.
What to do in the first hour
- Block the SIM card with your carrier — otherwise confirmation codes go to whoever has the phone.
- Terminate Telegram sessions from any device: Settings → Devices → terminate all other sessions. That also closes access to My Albums from the stolen phone.
- Mark the phone as lost in Apple's Find My or Google's Find My Device and erase it remotely if it doesn't turn up.
- Sign in to Telegram on the new phone and open My Albums — the photos are there. If you can't get into Telegram, enter the recovery code.
How it works in My Albums
- A copy with no effort. In the evening the bot reminds you to upload new photos; on the phone that's one screen and one button. Everything is encrypted before it's sent.
- The key in two places. It's kept in your Telegram account and duplicated by a 52-character recovery code — the bot offers to send it to your Saved Messages with one tap. The key never reaches our server.
- A new phone in a minute. Nothing to reinstall: the app opens inside Telegram on iPhone, Android and computer.
- Deleted by mistake isn't gone. A photo deleted in My Albums stays in the trash for 30 days.
- You can check it. Open any photo → “How this file looks on the server”: an encrypted file, not a picture.
What to set up today, while the phone is fine
- Open @MyAlbumsBot, tap “Start”, then “Open photos”. The key is created by itself.
- Upload your first photos and save the recovery code: the card appears after the upload, one tap and the code is in your Telegram Saved Messages. Better also on paper, at home.
- Turn on two-step verification in Telegram (Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification): then a stolen SIM card won't let anyone into your account.
- Keep the evening reminders on — they are the “copy with no effort”.
For the photos that matter most keep two independent copies: My Albums and, say, a folder on your computer. One service is one point of failure, however reliable it is.
FAQ
If my phone is stolen, will the thief see my photos in My Albums?
Only while the phone is unlocked and the Telegram session is alive. Terminate Telegram sessions from any other device — and access is closed. Secret albums are also locked with a password and lock again when the app is minimised.
What if I lose both the phone and access to Telegram?
The 52-character recovery code saves you: it gives access to the archive from any new account. Without the code and without the account nobody can open the photos, us included — that's the flip side of encryption.
How do I move the photos to a new phone?
You don't — they're already there. Sign in to the same Telegram, open My Albums: albums, people and captions are in place. Originals can be downloaded one by one, and the whole archive exported to a computer in Telegram Desktop: Gallery → “⋯” → “Export the archive to computer”.
How much space do I get?
5 GB free, no time limit and no card. More — 50 GB, 250 GB or 2 TB for 50, 170 or 570 ⭐ a month (about $1, $3.5 or $11). If you stop paying, the photos stay: you can view and download them, and everything above 5 GB is kept for as long as you had paid (at least a month, at most a year).
Are photos compressed on upload?
No. JPEG, HEIC and video are stored as they are, up to 20 GB per file; from a computer RAW and TIFF are accepted too.
